Surrendering to the Difference: When God Disrupts Your Normal

We are creatures of comfort. We cling to our routines, our predictable patterns, our well-worn paths. There's something deeply human about resisting change. We hold onto clothes that no longer fit, convinced that "one day" we'll squeeze back into them. We refuse to admit our eyes aren't what they used to be, stubbornly squinting rather than buying reading glasses. We fight against the very changes that time itself demands.

But what if our resistance to change isn't really about the change itself? What if we're actually resisting the uncertainty that comes with something different?

This tension between our desire for control and God's sovereign plans creates one of the most challenging dynamics in the life of faith. God has a peculiar way of placing us in situations where we cannot predict the outcome, where we cannot control the variables, where we must simply trust. These moments of uncertainty aren't punishments. They're the very spaces where authentic faith is cultivated and deepened.

The Pattern of Divine Difference

Throughout Scripture, we see a consistent pattern: God's ways introduce radical difference that challenges established norms and expectations. Consider the ministry of Jesus. His entire earthly mission was marked by boundary-crossing encounters that scandalized the religious establishment.

When Jesus asked a Samaritan woman for water, it violated every social convention of His day. Jewish men didn't speak to Samaritan women. Yet there He stood, initiating a conversation that would transform her life and her entire village.

When Jesus invited Himself to dinner at the home of Zacchaeus, a despised tax collector, the crowd was outraged. How could a holy man associate with such a sinner? But Jesus saw beyond the labels to the hungry heart beneath.

When religious leaders dragged a woman caught in adultery before Jesus, expecting Him to condemn her, He turned the tables entirely. "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone," He said, and one by one, the accusers dropped their stones and walked away.

Jesus was constantly introducing difference, not to be contrarian, but to reveal the heart of God and to cultivate faith in uncertain ground.

The Birth of Something New

The second chapter of Acts records one of history's most dramatic moments of divine difference: the birth of the church at Pentecost. The phrase "when the day of Pentecost was fully come" suggests something profound. That the Holy Spirit arrived at a divinely appointed time, according to a predetermined schedule that had nothing to do with human planning.

For those who feel behind schedule in life, this is liberating news. Your life may not be on your schedule, but you are on the right time schedule for God. He will redeem the time, restore the years, and fulfill every promise spoken over your life.

When the Holy Spirit came with the sound of a rushing wind, filling the house and resting on each person as tongues of fire, the gathered crowd became confused. Some mocked, claiming the believers were drunk. But Peter stood and clarified: "This is that which was prophesied by the prophet Joel, that in the last days, God would pour out His Spirit on all flesh."

The supernatural cannot be explained by natural minds. Spiritual things remain foolishness to those who are perishing. This is why worship and praise often seem excessive or emotional to those outside the faith. They cannot understand what God has brought you through, what He has delivered you from, what He has promised you for the future.

Four Marks of God's Difference

When God introduces His difference into our lives and communities, certain characteristics consistently emerge:

Supernatural Signs and Wonders: The early church experienced fear and awe as many signs and wonders were performed. The supernatural—that which cannot be explained by science or natural law, becomes the signature of God's presence. Every breath you take, every morning you wake, every heartbeat that sustains you is supernatural. Medical science can describe these processes but cannot replicate the spark of life itself. You are a walking miracle, fearfully and wonderfully made.

Economic Sharing Among Believers: The early Christians held all things in common, selling possessions to meet one another's needs. Despite attempts to discredit the church based on a few bad actors, the majority of churches continue this legacy of generosity. When hurricanes devastate communities, it's often the church that responds first, bringing personal chainsaws cutting people out of their homes, providing food and shelter, offering practical help before government assistance arrives. The church feeds the hungry, educates children, provides clean water, and empowers people financially. Don't let a few viral videos define the entire body of Christ.

Joyful Worship and Public Favor: The believers met daily in the temple and in homes, breaking bread with glad and sincere hearts, praising God. While we can praise God anywhere—at the grocery store, in our cars, at home—there's something uniquely powerful about praising God with fellow believers. In corporate worship, a millionaire and someone struggling financially can stand side by side, both lifting their voices to the same God. One person might be praising for a promotion received while another praises in faith for a promotion to come. One celebrates healing while another praises God for sustaining them through sickness. Worship levels the playing field.

Daily Growth: The Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Every single day, God performed the miracle of transformation, snatching someone from darkness, turning a life around, bringing someone into the kingdom. This daily pattern reveals God's consistent faithfulness and His desire to see none perish.

Any Day Now

If you find yourself in a season of uncertainty, take heart. You may be standing in the gap between prophecy spoken and prophecy fulfilled, between sowing in tears and reaping in joy. The details of how God will work may be unclear, but the outcome is certain for those who trust Him.

God often withholds the details because if we knew everything we'd have to walk through, many of us wouldn't take the first step. If we knew what we'd have to lay down, who we'd have to distance ourselves from, what uncomfortable changes we'd have to make. We might choose the familiar prison over the uncertain freedom.

But here's the truth: the blessing is always in the details you cannot yet see. The breakthrough is coming. The suddenly is approaching. Things are about to shift quickly.

Any day now, the God who is no respecter of persons will demonstrate His favor in your life just as He has in the lives of others. Any day now, the difference He's been orchestrating will become clear. Any day now, your testimony will encourage someone else to keep believing.

Surrender to the difference. Trust the uncertainty. Embrace the change. Because when God introduces difference into your life, it always ends with His goodness, His faithfulness, and His glory on full display.
